Missouri Headwaters State Park, 35 miles northwest of Bozeman, at the confluence of the Madison, Jefferson and Gallatin Rivers, is a favorite location for kayaking and canoeing.

Numerous ski areas pepper the region, which isn’t surprising, since the heart of the Rocky Mountains cuts through this area. Southeast of Bozeman, near the town of Roscoe, the 9,416-foot Red Lodge Mountain commands 1,600 acres of skiable terrain in the Beartooth Mountain Range.

Straddled between the northeast tip of Yellowstone and Red Lodge Mountain, sits Grasshopper Glacier, elevation 11,000, feet named for the millions of grasshoppers embedded in it. Montana’s highest mountain, Granite Peak (el. 12,799), nearby, is proving ground for seasoned mountain climbers. It is considered one of the most difficult mountains to climb in the lower 48.
