SOUTHEAST MONTANA. BIG SKY MEETS BIG ADVENTURE

Nowhere does cowboy culture and American Indian lore live on like it does in Southeast Montana. While this region is largely made up of ranch land and rural communities, Southeast Montana’s spectacular badlands and rolling prairie play host to real-life cattle drives and rodeos, wild-horse stampedes and powwows.

Yellowstone River Valley

In Southeast Montana, you can experience the untamed Yellowstone River Valley, as the river flows unchecked toward its rendezvous with the Missouri River. You can kayak in the gentle waves of Bighorn Canyon. You can watch the sunset paint the badlands with red and gold from your vantage point along the scenic drive to Makoshika State Park. Visit Montana’s mountains, see Yellowstone and Glacier National Parks, but don’t forget that you will never get the full picture of Montana’s natural wonders unless you experience the badlands, canyons, rivers and prairies of Southeast Montana.

Great People. Amazing Views. Beautiful Landscapes

Southeast Montana, known as Custer Country, is home to the Custer National Forest, a scenic wilderness area. The landscape consists of gently rolling plains and miles of oddly-shaped ridges, cliffs and cones that have become known as Montana’s badlands, the Southeast region is a jumble of bizarre topography and complex human history.
At the northeastern tip of the region, is Makoshika State Park, 11,000 acres of some of Montana’s most spectacular countryside. The largest state park in Montana, Makoshika is a geologic wonder. The badlands are believed to be the product of a vast fire that exposed two sedimentary layers to years of water, erosion and baking sun. The result is miles of coulees that are unlike anything seen in other regions of the country.
